BRANDS THAT ROCK ROGER BLACKWELL PDF

Brands That Rock by Roger Blackwell And Tina Stephan

Title: Brands That Rock by Roger Blackwell And Tina Stephan : What Business Leaders Can Learn from the World of Rock and Roll

Brands That Rock by Roger Blackwell And Tina Stephan Description: "Reading Brands That Rock is like attending business school, where classes on customer loyalty, consumer behavior, and branding are taught by Mick Jagger, Elton John, Steven Tyler, and Madonna."
--Tommy Hilfiger, Designer

Cadillac and The Rolling Stones. Victoria’s Secret and Madonna. Wal-Mart and KISS. What could these corporate brands and legendary rock bands have in common? Fans--devoted customers who not only display long-term buying loyalty and an insatiable appetite for spending, but evangelize to others the reasons for their adoration.

Today’s competitive times demand that retailers and manufacturers alike identify new ways to attract and retain customers. But few venture far from what their competitors have attempted. Brands That Rock takes you on a bold leap into the world of rock and roll and reveals how great companies can turn customers into fans with the same marketing strategies used by some of the biggest rock stars in history.
Like the one-hit wonders of the music world, most brands come and go, failing to survive pricing and advertising onslaughts from competitors. Why? Most successful rock stars will tell you that achieving cultural icon status depends on creating emotional connections with fans--be it a music group, a retailer, or a brand of coffee.

Brands That Rock highlights strategies for developing deep connections between brands and people that are used by many of today’s biggest and longest-lived rock groups, including:
  • Building brand loyalty one fan group at a time
  • Staying fresh in the marketplace while staying true to your core strength
  • Evolving at a rate that doesn’t alienate current customers
  • Focusing on the entire brand experience
  • Exuding energy and passion to command respect and grab attention
Even the most popular customer service programs can’t transform customers into fans--it’s the personality of a brand that resonates in the marketplace. If you want to increase market share, enhance brand longevity, or get your brand on stage and keep it rocking for years to come, this book shows you how.

Beginning Visual Basic 2010 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) - Thearon Willis, Bryan Newsome

Beginning Visual Basic 2010 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)
                                   - Thearon Willis, Bryan Newsome
This book is designed to teach you how to write useful programs in Visual Basic 2010 as quickly and easily as possible.
There are two kinds of beginners for whom this book is ideal:
  • You're a beginner to programming and you've chosen Visual Basic 2010 as the place to start. That's a great choice! Visual Basic 2010 is not only easy to learn, it's also fun to use and very powerful.
  • You can program in another language but you're a beginner to .NET programming. Again, you've made a great choice! Whether you've come from Fortran or Visual Basic 6, you'll find that this book quickly gets you up to speed on what you need to know to get the most from Visual Basic 2010.
Visual Basic 2010 offers a great deal of functionality in both tools and language. No one book could ever cover Visual Basic 2010 in its entirety—you would need a library of books. What this book aims to do is to get you started as quickly and easily as possible. It shows you the roadmap, so to speak, of what there is and where to go. Once we've taught you the basics of creating working applications (creating the windows and controls, how your code should handle unexpected events, what object-oriented programming is, how to use it in your applications, and so on) we’ll show you some of the areas you might want to try your hand at next:
  • Chapters 1 through 9 provide an introduction to Visual Studio 2010 and Windows programming. These chapters will help you install the Visual Studio 2010 IDE you'll use to create Visual Basic 2010 applications and learn your way around the interface. You'll be introduced to the .NET Framework and the CLR (Common Language Runtime). You'll learn to use variables, data types, comments, methods, and control software flow with the If statement and loops. You'll work with data in arrays, enumerations, constants, structures, ArrayLists, Collections, and tables. Chapter 6 provides an introduction to XAML and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) programming. XAML and WPF are the most recent addition to how VB programmers create user interfaces for their applications. You'll also work with events, create toolbars, buttons, forms, display dialog boxes, and create menus.
  • Chapter 10 provides an introduction to application debugging and error handling.
  • Chapters 11 through 13 provide an introduction to object-oriented programming (OOP) and building objects. You'll use classes, learn about reusability, work with constructors and inheritance, and see .NET Framework classes and namespaces. You’ll learn to work with OOP memory management, class libraries, you'll register assemblies, and see how to use third party class libraries.
  • Chapter 14 provides an introduction to creating Windows Forms user controls. While WPF user interfaces are newer, Windows forms are still in widespread use. You'll create and test controls and work with their properties.
  • Chapters 15 and 16 provide an introduction to programming with databases and covers Access, SQL Server, and ADO.NET. The chapters walk you through the SQL SELECT statement, Access queries, data access components, and data binding.
  • Chapters 17 and 18 provide an introduction to Dynamic Data Web Sites and ASP.NET and show you how to write applications for the Web. You'll work with the most current ASP.NET 4 web techniques in Visual Studio 2010.
  • Chapter 19 provides a brief introduction to XML, a powerful tool for integrating your applications with others—regardless of the language they were written in.
  • Chapter 20 introduces you to deploying applications using ClickOnce technology.

Whether at work or at home, we all have to deal with people we can't stand to be around. Our challenge is to develop creative ways to handle these difficult people. Brinkman and Kirschner, both doctors of naturopathic medicine and professional speakers, have just made our job easier with this lively guidebook, in which they identify and explore the psychological roots of ten specific behavior patterns that represent normal people at their worst. Realizing that changing oneself is more realistic than changing the behavior of others, the authors provide a variety of communicative skills that we can cultivate in ourselves to turn conflict into cooperation. Finally, Brinkman and Kirschner (How To Handle Difficult People with Tact and Skill, McGraw, 1994) illustrate how to use these skills with each of the ten problem behaviors. While all problem behaviors might not fit nicely into one of their ten categories, the authors do provide a dynamic assortment of interpersonal communication tools for managing most difficult people. Highly recommended for all libraries.

The First 90 Days: Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels

The First 90 Days: Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All LevelsThis earnest guide to career transition periods-when a new job or promotion puts an employee in an unfamiliar role-asserts, reassuringly, that navigating the all-important first 90 days is a "teachable skill." Business professor Watkins, co-author of Right From the Start: Taking Charge in a New Leadership Role, lays out a "standard framework" for leadership transitions, based on "five fundamental propositions," "ten key challenges," and a four-fold typology of situations that new managers find themselves in. Fortunately, Watkins balances the theorizing with practical steps managers can take to get on top of things and initiate changes, including elaborate self-assessment checklists, planning exercises and meticulous guidelines on how to have conversations with underlings and bosses. His advice, if not very original, is sound. He warns managers not to assume that their existing skills will suffice for new roles, advises them to pursue small-scale "early wins" to boost credibility, and admonishes workplace Machiavellis to "avoid pressing for closure until you are confident the balance of forces acting on key people is tipping your way." Watkins's penchant for cut-and-dried schematizations sometimes goes overboard, especially in the book's plethora of elementary graphs, tables, diagrams and matrices (novice orators are informed that "classic values invoked to convince others to embrace potentially painful change are summarized in table 8-1," while the oceanic topic of "Intersecting Cultural Dimensions" gets boiled down to a three-ring Venn diagram). But if the content of Watkins's counsel is not always obviously helpful, his systematized approach to thinking will at least help panicky executives keep their wits about them.

Review“…really useful…well laid out…” (oraclehome.co.uk, October 2005)

Book Description
What is this book about?

With the release of PHP 5 and the Zend Engine 2, PHP finally graduates from it earliest days as a lightweight scripting syntax to an powerful object oriented programming language that can hold its own against the Java and .NET architectures that currently dominate corporate software development. This book has a pragmatic focus on how to use PHP in the larger scheme of enterprise-class software development.

What does this book cover?

Unlike Java or .NET, there is little discussion of the application of design patterns, component architectures, and best-practices to the development of applications using PHP. Software written in the absence of this sort of higher-order architecture will never be able to match the robust frameworks that Java and .NET ship with out of the box. This book addresses this issue by covering the following material:

* Part 1 discusses the OO concepts that were initially explored in Beginning PHP 5 and a demonstration of how to implement them in PHP 5. This section also covers UML modeling and provides a brief introduction to project management techniques that are covered in more depth in Part 4.
* Parts 2 and 3 present objects and object hierarchies that, when completed, comprise a robust toolkit that developers will be able to reuse on future projects. These chapters are designed to arm the professional PHP developer with the sort of constructs that are available out of the box with platforms such as Java and .NET — from simple utility classes like Collection and Iterator, to more complex constructs like Model/View/Controller architectures and state machines.
* Part 4 shows how to use the toolkit from Parts 2 and 3 to create real-world applications. We look at the development of a robust contact management system that will leverage the componentry and concepts already discussed and introduce project management and software architecture concepts that enable developers to accurately identify business requirements, design scalable, extensible platforms, and handle change management effectively. It covers the waterfall and spiral project management paradigms and include a discussion on eXtreme Programming and other approaches to software development.
* The Appendices include an extended discussion on the effective use of CVS, introduce the Zend Studio IDE and related tools, and discuss performance tuning and scalability.
